世界知的所有権機関(WIPO)は2026年7月14日、生成AIの特許に関する報告書を発表し、2014〜25年に公開された関連特許数はソフトバンクグループが2985件で世界首位だったことを明らかにしました。

The Explosive Growth of Patent Filings in the Generative AI Field
On July 14, 2026, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released a report on generative AI patents, revealing that SoftBank Group ranked first worldwide with 2,985 published patent applications in the field during the period from 2014 to 2025.
Inspired by this report, I asked a generative AI system to conduct a multifaceted analysis of the explosive growth in patent filings related to generative AI and the latest intellectual property strategies of Japanese companies. Please find the analysis below for your reference.

イトーキの知財・無形資産ガバナンスへの挑戦

知財・無形資産ガバナンス協会(IPIAGA 呼称:アイピーガ)の2026年7月度 知財ガバナンス研究会(リモート会議)が7月14日午後行われました。
その中から、今回は株式会社イトーキの知的財産推進課・古賀貴英氏とIR/SR部長・木場氏による「知財・無形資産ガバナンスの取り組み」の講演が行われました。
(会員向けなので、エッセンスしかお伝え出来ません。)
本講演で印象的だったのは、知財部門とIR部門が一体となって知財・無形資産を企業価値向上へ結び付ける取り組みです。知財を「権利取得・保護」のための機能ではなく、経営戦略を実現する無形資産として位置付け、統合報告書を通じて投資家との対話を強化している点が紹介されました。
また、オフィス家具メーカーから「働く空間をデザインする企業」へ進化する中で、OFFICE 1.0(製品販売)→2.0(空間・働き方提案)→3.0(AI・データを活用した継続的なオフィス最適化サービス)という事業変革と、それを支える知財戦略・AI戦略が詳しく説明されました。
さらに、IR部門からは、「知財は特許部門の仕事ではなく経営戦略そのもの」「IR担当者は企業価値の翻訳者」との考え方が示され、知財・人的資本・AI・ブランドなどの無形資産を財務価値へ結び付けるストーリーを投資家へ伝えることの重要性が強調されました。
知財とIRが連携し、統合報告書を単なる開示資料ではなく、企業価値創造を伝えるコミュニケーションツールとして活用するイトーキの取り組みは、知財・無形資産ガバナンスを実践する企業の先進事例として、大変示唆に富む内容でした。

ITOKI’s Challenge in Intellectual Property and Intangible Asset Governance
The July 2026 Intellectual Property Governance Study Group (held remotely) of the Intellectual Property & Intangible Asset Governance Association (IPIAGA) took place on the afternoon of July 14, 2026.
Among the presentations, I would like to highlight the lecture titled "Initiatives in Intellectual Property and Intangible Asset Governance", delivered by Takahide Koga, Intellectual Property Promotion Section, and Mr. Kiba, General Manager of the IR/SR Department, of ITOKI Corporation.
(As this was a members-only session, I can only share its key takeaways.)
What impressed me most was ITOKI's integrated approach in which the Intellectual Property and IR functions work together to enhance corporate value through intellectual property and other intangible assets. Rather than treating intellectual property merely as a function for acquiring and protecting rights, the company positions it as a strategic intangible asset that enables the execution of its corporate strategy. The speakers also explained how ITOKI leverages its Integrated Report to strengthen dialogue with investors.
Another notable topic was the company's business transformation from a traditional office furniture manufacturer into a company that designs workplaces. The presentation described the evolution from OFFICE 1.0 (product sales), to OFFICE 2.0 (workspace and workstyle solutions), and further to OFFICE 3.0 (AI- and data-driven continuous office optimization services), together with the intellectual property and AI strategies supporting this transformation.
From the IR perspective, the speakers emphasized that "intellectual property is not merely the responsibility of the patent department—it is an integral part of corporate strategy," and that "IR professionals are translators of corporate value." They stressed the importance of communicating to investors a compelling value creation story that connects intangible assets—including intellectual property, human capital, AI, and brand equity—to financial value.
ITOKI's approach, in which the Intellectual Property and IR functions collaborate to use the Integrated Report not simply as a disclosure document but as a strategic communication tool for conveying corporate value creation, provides a highly insightful example of best practices in intellectual property and intangible asset governance.
Since this presentation was exclusively for members of the Intellectual Property Governance Study Group, I am only able to share its essence. カプコンの知財・無形資産ガバナンスに関する取り組み

知財・無形資産ガバナンス協会(IPIAGA 呼称:アイピーガ)の2026年7月度 知財ガバナンス研究会(リモート会議)が7月14日午後行われました。
その中から、今回は、株式会社カプコン 知的財産部部長、大阪工業大学知的財産学部 客員教授 奥山 幹樹氏による「知財・無形資産ガバナンスに関する取り組み」について取り上げます。(会員向けなので、エッセンスしかお伝え出来ません。)
本講演では、ゲーム業界を代表するIP企業であるカプコンが、知的財産を単なる「権利取得・保護」の対象ではなく、「企業理念を実現し、持続的な企業価値を創出する経営資源」として位置付けている点が詳しく紹介されました。
特に、知財部門を事業部門や開発部門のパートナーとして再定義し、アイデアが生まれる土壌づくり、人材育成、組織文化の醸成、ブランド価値向上、さらには未来社会への価値創造までを担う「知財サステナブルデザイン」という独自の考え方は、多くの企業にとって示唆に富む内容でした。
また、ワンコンテンツ・マルチユース戦略を支える知財活動、知財教育や産学連携、ファンアートガイドラインによるコミュニティ形成、知財情報の統合報告書・有価証券報告書への反映など、知財ガバナンスを企業経営やESG・サステナビリティと結び付けた実践例も数多く紹介されました。
さらに印象的なのは、こうした従来の知財部門の枠を超えた活動は、経営層の理解と承認のもとで推進されているという点です。奥山氏は、AIやデジタル技術の活用によって知財業務の効率化を進め、そこで創出した工数を、新たなアイデア創出や社内外との共創、人材育成、知財ブランディングなどの高付加価値業務へ再投資するという考え方を紹介しました。単なる「効率化」で終わるのではなく、「生み出した時間を何に使うか」を設計(デザイン)することこそが重要であり、そのために経営の理解を得て適切に人材を配置し、新たな価値創造へとつなげている点は、多くの企業にとって大きな示唆を与える内容となっています。
知財部門の役割を「権利化」から「価値創造」へと拡張し、AIによる業務改革と人材・組織・企業文化の変革を一体的に進めながら、知財を軸に企業価値を高めていく新しい知財マネジメントの姿を学ぶことができる、大変示唆に富んだ講演でした。

Capcom’s Initiatives in Intellectual Property and Intangible Asset Governance
The July 2026 Intellectual Property Governance Study Group (remote meeting), organized by the Intellectual Property and Intangible Asset Governance Association (IPIAGA, commonly known as "IPGA"), was held on July 14.
In this post, I would like to highlight the presentation "Initiatives in Intellectual Property and Intangible Asset Governance" by Motoki Okuyama, General Manager of the Intellectual Property Department at Capcom Co., Ltd. and Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Intellectual Property, Osaka Institute of Technology. (As this was an event exclusively for members, I can only share the key takeaways.)
The presentation explained in detail how Capcom—one of the world's leading IP-driven companies in the gaming industry—views intellectual property not merely as something to be acquired and protected, but as a strategic management asset that realizes the company's philosophy and creates sustainable corporate value.
Particularly noteworthy was Capcom's concept of "IP Sustainable Design," which redefines the role of the IP department as a partner to business and development divisions. Under this approach, the IP function extends far beyond conventional rights management to foster an environment where ideas can flourish, develop talent, cultivate organizational culture, enhance brand value, and ultimately create value for future society. This unique philosophy offers valuable insights for many companies.
The presentation also introduced numerous practical examples of how Capcom integrates IP governance into corporate management and ESG/sustainability initiatives. These included IP activities supporting its One Content, Multiple Usage strategy, IP education, industry-academia collaboration, community building through fan art guidelines, and the incorporation of IP-related information into integrated reports and securities reports.
Another particularly impressive point was that these initiatives, which extend well beyond the traditional scope of an IP department, are carried out with the understanding and approval of senior management. Mr. Okuyama explained that by leveraging AI and digital technologies to improve the efficiency of routine IP operations, the company reallocates the time and resources created through those efficiencies to higher-value activities, such as generating new ideas, promoting collaboration inside and outside the company, developing human resources, and strengthening IP branding.
Rather than treating efficiency improvement as the end goal, Capcom emphasizes designing how the newly created time should be used. With management's support, the company deliberately assigns people to these higher-value initiatives, transforming operational efficiency into new sources of corporate value. This perspective provides an important lesson for many organizations.
The presentation demonstrated a new vision of IP management in which the role of the IP department evolves from simply securing intellectual property rights to creating corporate value. By combining AI-driven operational transformation with the development of people, organizations, and corporate culture, Capcom is building a management model that enhances enterprise value through intellectual property. It was an exceptionally insightful presentation with many practical implications.

2026年度 日本ライセンス協会 奈良年次大会

2026年7月11日、奈良市で行われた2026年度 日本ライセンス協会 奈良年次大会のパネルディスカッション「生成AI・DXで進化する知財ライセンス― AIファースト時代の戦略転換」にパネラーとして参加しました。私の担当部分の資料を添付しましたので、ご参照ください。
企業法務・知財マネジメントWGでも「生成AIなどの最新技術が知財マネジメントに及ぼす影響」がテーマとして取り上げられ、テーマ1「生成AIと営業秘密管理」、テーマ2「AI時代の特許実務“3つの難問” - 発明該当性・発明者認定・引用発明適格性を起点に議論する」が議論されました。
生成AIが少しずつ知財活動に浸透していることを感じます。ただ、AIの進化は急速で当然のようにこれまでの前提が崩れる時代なのですが、今使っているAIが進化しないことを前提に考えている方が多いのが気になりました。

On July 11, 2026, I participated as a panelist in the panel discussion, "Intellectual Property Licensing Evolving Through Generative AI and Digital Transformation: Strategic Transformation in the AI-First Era," at the 2026 Licensing Executives Society Japan (LES Japan) Nara Annual Conference, held in Nara City. My presentation materials are attached for your reference.
The Corporate Legal Affairs and Intellectual Property Management Working Group also addressed the theme, "The Impact of Emerging Technologies, Including Generative AI, on Intellectual Property Management." Discussions focused on two key topics:
  • Topic 1: Generative AI and Trade Secret Management
  • Topic 2: Three Challenging Issues in Patent Practice in the AI Era — Focusing on Patent-Eligible Subject Matter, Inventorship, and the Eligibility of Prior Art References
It is clear that generative AI is steadily becoming integrated into intellectual property activities. At the same time, however, AI is evolving at an extraordinary pace, and we are entering an era in which many long-held assumptions will naturally be overturned. What particularly struck me was that many people continue to discuss the future based on the assumption that the AI tools they use today will remain essentially unchanged. In reality, the rapid evolution of AI itself should be treated as a fundamental premise when considering future intellectual property strategies and practices.

Japan’s Second AI Basic Plan and the Vertical AI Sector Strategies
On July 10, 2026, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi convened the Fifth Meeting of the AI Strategy Headquarters. During the meeting, the Draft Second AI Basic Plan, formulated under Japan’s AI Act, and the Interim Report on the Vertical AI Sector Strategies were discussed and approved.

2026年6月30日、Anthropicはサンフランシスコで開催した特別イベント「The Briefing: AI for Science」において、科学者が日常的に使用する60以上のデータベースを統合した研究用ワークベンチ「Claude Science」を発表しました。
実は、2026年4月にOpenAIが生物学および創薬の推論に特化した専用モデル「GPT-Rosalind」を発表し、この領域における競争の火蓋を切っっていました。そして、5月には、Google DeepMindが年次開発者会議(I/O)において、自律型マルチエージェントシステムである「Co-Scientist」や進化型アルゴリズム探索エージェント「AlphaEvolve」を包含する包括的エコシステム「Gemini for Science」を発表していました。

The New Battleground in AI Development: Automating Scientific Research
On June 30, 2026, Anthropic unveiled Claude Science, a research workbench that integrates more than 60 databases commonly used by scientists, during its special event, "The Briefing: AI for Science," held in San Francisco.
In fact, the race had already begun in April 2026, when OpenAI introduced GPT-Rosalind, a specialized reasoning model designed for biology and drug discovery. Then, in May, Google DeepMind announced Gemini for Science at its annual developer conference (Google I/O), a comprehensive ecosystem encompassing the autonomous multi-agent system Co-Scientist and the evolutionary algorithm discovery agent AlphaEvolve.
Anthropic's latest announcement has made it clear that the primary battleground of AI development has shifted toward the automation of scientific research, where the three leading AI companies are now engaged in an intense competition for technological leadership.
Behind this race lie multiple powerful forces: financial pressure associated with anticipated initial public offerings (IPOs), fierce competition to recruit and retain top AI researchers, and growing geopolitical tensions surrounding biosecurity. AI is rapidly evolving beyond its traditional role as a computational tool to become a true scientific collaborator—one capable of assisting researchers throughout the entire scientific process, from hypothesis generation to experimental validation. This transformation has the potential to bring about an irreversible change in the way scientific research is conducted.
