ScientistTwoが示す「研究を進めるAI」

Google Cloud AI Researchなどの研究者が提案した「ScientistTwo」（2026年9月17日公開）は、人間が研究課題を与えると、複数のAIが役割分担し、仮説の考案から実験、検証、論文執筆まで自律的に進める仕組みです。トップ学会に採択された論文107本をAIに渡したところ、86本で元の手法を上回る新手法をAIが自力で考え出し、論文とコードまで書き上げたとのこと。人間がするのは「この課題を解いてほしい」と伝えるところまで。あとはAIが既存手法の弱点を洗い出し、アイデアを出して実験し、うまくいかなければ練り直します。ただし、対象は主に計算機上で検証できる機械学習研究です。
それでも、AIに研究のまとまった工程を任せる姿を具体的に示した点は重要です。人間が課題を定め、AIチームが解決策を探り、実験で確かめる。ScientistTwoは、そんな研究の進め方を考えるうえで、注目したい論文です。

ScientistTwo: AI That Moves Research Forward
ScientistTwo, introduced by researchers at Google Cloud AI Research and other institutions on September 17, 2026, is a system in which multiple AI agents divide up roles and autonomously carry out the research process—from generating hypotheses to conducting experiments, validating results, and writing papers—once a human provides a research question. According to the researchers, when the system was given 107 papers accepted at leading conferences, it independently devised new methods that outperformed the original approaches in 86 cases, producing both research papers and code. Human involvement extends only to specifying the task: “Please solve this problem.” From there, the AI identifies weaknesses in existing methods, generates ideas, conducts experiments, and revises its approach when things do not work out. However, its scope is primarily machine learning research that can be tested computationally.
Even with this limitation, the work is significant because it concretely demonstrates how a substantial portion of the research process can be entrusted to AI. Humans define the problem, while a team of AI agents explores potential solutions and tests them through experiments. The ScientistTwo paper is worth paying attention to as we consider this way of conducting research.
