Japan Has Begun to Break Away from Its Status as an “AI Latecomer”
The May 1, 2026 YouTube video titled “[Japan’s First Year of AI Sovereignty] LLM-jp-4 Released, Surpassing GPT-4o! Next-Generation 332-Billion-Parameter Model Planned + Stockmark European Patent + Turing Autonomous Driving” highlighted that, in April 2026, LLM-jp-4 released by the National Institute of Informatics demonstrated Japanese-language performance exceeding GPT-4o on some benchmarks, indicating that Japan has begun to break away from its status as an “AI latecomer.”
In addition, progress in document analysis by Stockmark and autonomous driving technology by Turing was also presented as evidence that Japan’s domestic AI ecosystem is developing in a multifaceted way at a global level, together with future prospects for the development of very large-scale models.
