中外製薬は、2020年からデジタルトランスフォーメーション（DX）の強化を図り、2030年に向けた「CHUGAI DIGITAL VISION 2030」を策定していますが、生成AIの導入と活用はその中核を成す技術として位置づけられています。
2024年11月21日に行われた『生成AI活用基盤「Amazon Bedrock」を活用した事例発表会』では、中外製薬による生成AI活用の基盤構築、環境整備の取り組みについて紹介されたとのことです。
中外製薬は、全社員が生成AIを使いこなせる環境を整備することを目指し「Chugai AI Assistant」という生成AIアプリを内製で開発し、プロトコール作成補助（臨床試験の実施計画書のドラフト作成を生成AIに依頼し、効率化）、プログラミング支援（データサイエンティストや非データサイエンティストが生成AIを利用して、PythonやRのコード作成やエラー修正を実施）、データ分析（アンケート結果の集計や分析に生成AIを活用し、生産性を向上）などに、7000名以上の社員が日常的に利用しているとのことです。
今後は、R＆D領域における論文の探索や利活用の効率化、標的分子探索への活用、臨床プロセスでの非構造化データの構造化や、長期に及ぶ臨床計画のデザイン、試験の関連文書やQ＆A、各種申請書の作成アシストなどでの活用が想定されています。
AIを活用することによる創薬期間の短縮や開発費用の低下、成功確率の向上などの成果が期待されます。

Chugai AI Assistant: Generative AI for R&D and Clinical Trials
 
Chugai Pharmaceutical has been strengthening its digital transformation (DX) initiatives since 2020 and has established the "CHUGAI DIGITAL VISION 2030" as a roadmap toward 2030. Within this framework, the adoption and utilization of generative AI are positioned as core technologies.
At the "Use Case Presentation for Generative AI Platform 'Amazon Bedrock'" held on November 21, 2024, Chugai Pharmaceutical shared its efforts in building a foundational platform and creating an environment for generative AI utilization.
To enable all employees to proficiently use generative AI, Chugai Pharmaceutical internally developed a generative AI application called "Chugai AI Assistant." Over 7,000 employees use this tool daily for various purposes, including:

• Protocol Drafting Assistance: Utilizing generative AI to draft clinical trial implementation plans, improving efficiency.
• Programming Support: Helping data scientists and non-data scientists create Python and R code or fix errors using generative AI.
• Data Analysis: Enhancing productivity by leveraging generative AI for aggregating and analyzing survey results.

Looking ahead, generative AI is expected to be utilized in the following R&D areas:

• Streamlining the search and utilization of academic papers.
• Assisting in the exploration of target molecules.
• Structuring unstructured data in clinical processes.
• Designing long-term clinical plans.
• Supporting the creation of related documents, Q&A materials, and various application forms.

The company anticipates outcomes such as shortening drug development timelines, reducing development costs, and increasing the success rate of drug development through the use of AI.
