Bartz v. Should AI Training Using Copyrighted Works Be Protected as Fair Use? In June 2025, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California issued two rulings concerning artificial intelligence. In both the Bartz v. Anthropic and Kadrey v. Meta cases, the court determined that AI training using copyrighted works should be protected under the doctrine of fair use. As there appears to be considerable debate on this topic, I had generative AI conduct a thorough investigation. Please refer to the attached results from the Deep Research functions of Gemini (Google), ChatGPT (OpenAI), Perplexity, and Genspark. Please note that the analyses and findings by generative AI are based solely on publicly available information and may not accurately reflect the actual circumstances. They may also contain inaccuracies, so please review with that understanding. Your browser does not support viewing this document. Click here to download the document.
