8月23日から北海道大学サマーセミナー2025が北海道大学で開催されています。
北海道大学大学院法学研究科が主宰して毎年行われているサマーセミナーで、知的財産事件に携わる実務家を対象として、今年度は、特許法に関する課題を取り上げ、「最新の知的財産訴訟における実務的課題――特許法をめぐって――」ということです。
8月23日は、標準必須特許を巡る論点と国際動向（鈴木　將文　早稲田大学法学学術院教授）、特許権の消尽論の新局面－リサイクルとサプライ・チェーン－（田村　善之　東京大学大学院法学政治学研究科教授、北海道大学名誉教授）の講義、そして6年ぶりの懇親会がありました。

標準必須特許は、この数年ご無沙汰していた分野なので、非常に良い勉強になりました。
消尽論は、気になる点の整理がしっかりできましたので、大助かりでした。
懇親会では、セミナーの演者の先生方、一人知財で苦労している企業の知財担当者、スタートアップ中小企業で苦労されている弁理士、昔私の講義を聴いていただいたことのある企業知財部の方など、旧交を温めたり新しい方々と知り合えたり、良い機会でした。

Hokkaido University Summer Seminar 2025
The Hokkaido University Summer Seminar 2025 began on August 23 at Hokkaido University.
Organized annually by the Graduate School of Law at Hokkaido University, this seminar is aimed at legal professionals involved in intellectual property cases. This year’s theme is “Practical Challenges in the Latest Intellectual Property Litigation — Focusing on Patent Law.”
On August 23, lectures included:

“Issues and International Trends Surrounding Standard Essential Patents” by Professor Masafumi Suzuki (Waseda University Faculty of Law)
“A New Phase in the Theory of Patent Exhaustion: Recycling and Supply Chains” by Professor Yoshiyuki Tamura (The University of Tokyo Graduate Schools for Law and Politics, Professor Emeritus at Hokkaido University)

The day also featured the first networking reception in six years.
As it had been a while since I last engaged with the topic of standard essential patents, it was a very informative session. The discussion on patent exhaustion helped clarify several points I had been wondering about, which was incredibly helpful.
At the reception, I had the chance to reconnect with the seminar speakers, company IP staff struggling with limited resources, patent attorneys working hard in startups and SMEs, and even someone from a corporate IP department who once attended my lecture. It was a valuable opportunity to catch up and make new connections.
